danefield relay 2024

update 3 july 2024

The results from a highly successful Danefield Relay 2024, held last night in perfect running conditions, are now available here A big well done to all the runners, particularly the winning teams - Baxter’s Babes (P&B) - overall winners, Pudsey Pacers - first ladies, Leeds City - first male vets, Pudsey & Bramley - first ladies vets, Scrambled Legs (Ilkley Harriers) - first juniors, Chevin Musketeers - first mixed open and Pudsey Pacers (again) - first mixed vets, and fastest individuals - Joe Baxter and Stella Cross.

update 30 june 2024

With just 2 days to go before this year's Danefield Relay a few updates/reminders:

1) Pre-entries - we have 118 teams pre-entered so a similar number to last year.. There will be entry on the day at no extra cost - £10 per team cash only.

2) Registration/payment/number collection - registration should be open between c5.30pm and 7pm in the event field (where Chevin Forest parkrun finishes for those who have ran that but not this race before) - ready for the start at the usual place on the main track adjacent to the event field at 7.15pm.

3) Car parking / getting there etc - although there are two car parks on the Danefield side of Chevin (Upper and Lower Shawfield Car Parks opposite Mistal Kitchen) and we will have parking marshals here, given the high numbers expected, and that we do not have exclusive rights to the car parks, we would encourage people to car share and park up at Surprise View (opposite the Royalty pub) or close by informal laybys and walk/run/jog down to Danefield (as per the request for Chevin Forest parkrun), at East Chevin Quarry car park further down East Chevin Road towards Otley or in Otley itself and walk/run up the hill.

Alternatively, and preferably, we would encourage cycling or walking - there will be available space to park bikes, or public transport to Otley and then walking/running up the hill as above.

4) Facilities - there will be a portaloo or two in the smaller of the two car parks close to the start - these have been put in place for the race.

5) Water - although some water and paper cups will be provided at the finish (we had plenty of stock from previous races!) you are encouraged to bring your own water bottles.

6) Course conditions / weather update - prior to yesterday’s rain the route was pretty much dry but you could expect some mud down on the bottom path. Current forecast for the night is for some light showers before drying up, with perfect running temperatures of 14c.

7) Prizegiving - should be around c8.45pm (TBC on the night)

update 20 may 2024

Pre-entry is now open for this year’s Danefield Relay using this Google Docs Entry Form - Danefield Entry Form 2024

Tips for completing the entry form: The form is straightforward with just the following information required: Page 1 - name and email address of person completing the form, plus team/club name, Pages 2-4 - individual leg runners - only first name/surname and age category required (age categories are shown on each page - juniors are age 15-17 inclusive), Page 5 - confirmation of acceptance of conditions of entry etc - then ‘submit’ the form.’ Pre-entries close at 7pm on Saturday 29 June 2024, this is also the deadline for making any changes to already entered teams.

Entry fee is £10 per team - to be paid on the night.

UPDATE 4 July (6pm):

Hope everyone is looking forward to tomorrow's relay - just a couple of updates:

1) Travel/parking - as we have 104 teams pre-entered it is likely to be very busy at and around the car parks on East Chevin Road adjacent to the event field, therefore we ask that: a) You car-share; b) park at Surprise View or the informal parking laybys along York Gate or Old Lane, or even down in Otley itself; c) consider cycling to the event. We will have parking marshals so please need their instructions, also please note that neither Horsforth Fellandale (as organising club) nor myself as named Race Organiser will accept any liability for unsafe parking or fines as a result of that parking.

2) Race registration - opens at 6pm - entry payment is by cash only.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night on what should be a great event as always.

Update 8 june 2022 (less than 4 weeks until race day).

Race entries:

This year, to save time on the night we are trialling pre-entry via Google Forms – the entry form will be available on here and on our event Facebook page in the next few days, with payment and collection of numbers to be on the night only. An alternative to pre-entering is to print out the form and bring it with you on the night.

Race categories/prizes and individual prizes will be as below:

o    Male Open

o    Male Vets (40+)

o    Ladies Open

o    Ladies Vets (40+)

o    Mixed Open

o    Mixed Vets (40+)

o    Junior (age 15-18 on race day)

o    Fastest Male

o    Fastest Female

o    Fastest Male Vet

o    Fastest Female Vet

o    Fastest Junior

Ad-hoc teams (ie not from same club are welcome)

On the night:

Parking – please car share if possible and park considerately, remembering that we do not have the sole use of the venue and car parks.

We would ask that instead of parking on the verges close to the two main Danefield Car Parks (Upper and Lower Shawfield) you park at East Chevin Quarry (about 600 metres from the race HQ), informal parking laybys on Old Lane (1.4km from race HQ), Surprise View car park or the informal laybys on Yorkgate (1,5km from race HQ) – using these locations will also give you a decent warm-up walk/run but please allow plenty of time to walk to the race HQ/register/pick-up numbers etc.

Alternatively there is plenty of free parking in Otley itself – an uphill 2km to race HQ

Other info/requests: Please bring your own cup / water bottle (there should be some water available) and safety pins if possible.

The Race:

·A reminder that the relay is run under Fell Runners Association rules, as such all competitors taking part do so by complying with the  fra-requirements-for-runners-2022.pdf (fellrunner.org.uk)

·As the relay is an approx. CS/BS fell race there are no mandatory kit requirements although requirements will be at the Race Organiser’s discretion on the night.

The race will start at 7.15pm prompt with the first leg (as always) starting from the main track just above the Lower Shawfield car park. Changeover/2nd and 3rd leg starts will be in the open area.

·The route (see map) will be well marked and marshalled. Although much of the route is on good tracks; as befits a fell race, there are some more technical sections with rocks and roots on both descents and ascents. Depending on timings there may be a mass start for 3rd leg runners – we will play this by ear on the night. Prize-giving will be at 8,45pm approximately next to the registration gazebo.

VIRTUAL DANEFIELD 2021

Horsforth Fellandale's 2021 Virtual Danefield relay is to take place this year from Saturday June 19th to Sunday July 4th inclusive Yorkshire Runner have kindly sponsored the event with prizes for the fastest male and female individual and a voucher or socks for each participant. We also have a team competition with spot prizes. No entry fee is required but we do encourage those running to donate to this year's chosen charity which is Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Sarah Glover is fundraising for Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity (justgiving.com)

Fuller details, including details on prizes, how to send in results, course etc available here: Horsforth Fellandale's Virtual Danefield Relay 2021 - ArcGIS StoryMaps.

danefield relay 2021 cancellation:

Regrettably the Fellandale committee have agreed to cancel this year’s Danefield Relay. Although some races are starting up again, and by early July further restrictions should be lifted, the committee felt that, given the nature of the event, we could not safely follow the FRA COVID-19 Guidelines particularly around social-distancing. We also felt that with a busy second half of 2021 likely race-calendar-wise we would struggle to find a date to suit later in the year.

Hopefully we will be back in 2022, in the meantime look out for ‘Virtual’ Danefield 2021 - more news on that in the next couple of weeks.

DANEFIELD RELAY 2020 CANCELLATION:

It is with great regret that, after having received confirmation today (20 March 2020) that Leeds City Council Parks and Countryside Services are not accepting any new event bookings for any of their sites (obviously including Chevin/Danefield) between now and the end of June as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, we are left with no option but to cancel this year's Danefield Relay which was due to take place on Tuesday 30 June.
